Main Purpose of Job:
This is a specialised role focused on enhancing the batting skills of both Senior and Academy
players within the Somerset County Cricket Club women’s cricket programme. This role is crucial
for maintaining high performance and competitiveness, ensuring that players are well-prepared
for domestic competitions and first XI selection. The Women’s Assistant Coach and Batting Lead
will collaborate closely with professional staff and pathway staff to ensure a cohesive
development strategy that aligns with the Somerset framework. Alongside this provide support &
coaching assistance as required by the Director of Cricket, Women’s Head Coach & Director of
Talent & Development.

Main Responsibilities:
Coaching and Player Development

  • Provide all year-round high-quality batting coaching and support to Senior players
    and, when possible, Academy players, ensuring alignment with the club’s strategic
    objectives and coaching philosophy from regional pathways through to the elite
    professional level.
  • Deliver elite 1-1 coaching sessions and general coaching assistance as required by the
    Head Coach, Director of Talent & Development, and Girls Academy Lead.
  • Lead the planning and execution of development programmes for batters, preparing
    them for the demands of domestic and national level competitions while
    incorporating innovative techniques and strategies to enhance player performance.
  • Conduct individual and group batting sessions as directed by the Head Coach,
    Director of Talent & Development, and Girls Academy Lead, focusing on technical,
    tactical, and mental skills that allow batters to succeed.
  • Assist the Head Coach with preparing, developing, and supporting the needs of the
    professional squad, during both the winter and summer, ensuring alignment with
    overall team strategies.
  • Provide an environment with high levels of challenge, support, and innovation that
    develops and facilitates elite skills and behaviours, ensuring the continuous
    improvement of players’ technical and mental capabilities.

Strategic Planning and Talent Management

  • Support the Director of Talent & Development and Girls Pathway staff in developing
    and implementing a long-term strategy to deliver a constant stream of players onto
    the Somerset CCC professional staff, incorporating data-driven decision-making to
    identify and develop talent.
  • Oversee the batting talent pool, monitor player development, and adjust performance
    plans as necessary to optimise growth and readiness for higher levels, making datadriven decisions to ensure the effectiveness of these plans.
  • Contribute to the talent identification processes with the Director of Talent &
    Development, helping to maintain a depth chart for batters based on data-driven
    assessments and long-term strategic goals.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with the Women’s Head Coach and other coaching staff to support
    team preparations, player selection processes, and overall squad development
    throughout the year, ensuring that all decisions are aligned with performance data
    and club strategies.
  • Support the Head of Pathway Coaching in facilitating and delivering specific specialist
    coach development sessions to regional coaches, sharing innovative approaches and
    best practices in batting coaching.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including partner
    counties, to enhance the development pipeline and support for Somerset’s batting
    talent, ensuring a collaborative approach to player development.
  • Represent the Club as directed by the Director of Cricket, Women’s Head Coach, or
    Director of Talent & Development, in the promotion of the Club on matters relating to
    the playing and organisation of cricket, ensuring that all communications are
    consistent with the club’s values and strategic objectives.
    Player Reviews and Continuous Improvement
  • Implement, monitor, and review individual development and performance plans for
    Somerset CCC and appropriate Academy players, utilising performance data and
    analytics to tailor coaching methods and track progress.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary performance reviews for players, providing insights into
    batting skills development and progress for each Somerset CCC and Academy
    player, ensuring that feedback is grounded in objective data and aligned with
    individual performance plans.
  • Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as requested by the Director of Cricket,
    Head Coach, or Director of Talent & Development, which may include attending
    seminars, workshops, and meetings to stay updated with the latest coaching
    techniques and strategies, particularly in the use of performance data and analytics.

Required Skills & Experience

• A minimum ECB Level 3 or international equivalent coaching qualification, or ideally
working towards ECB Level 4.
• Proven track record of developing batting talent at both junior and senior levels within an
elite sporting environment, with experience in women’s cricket highly desirable.
• A strong understanding of adolescent player development within a pathway context and
its unique nuances.
• In-depth knowledge of supporting the technical development of batters within an elite
pathway or professional context.
• In-depth knowledge of how to develop tactical understanding in elite batters (Academy
and Professional) both in training and around match play.
• Excellent communication skills, the ability to build effective relationships and conduct
elite coaching sessions.
• High level of self-awareness skills with a focus on personal growth and development
• Proven track record of motivating and influencing senior and pathway players, coaches &
teams.

• Ability to lead programmes, inspire players, and create development strategies that
contribute to the team’s success.
• Capable of analysing performance data to enhance player development and strategic
planning.
